Re: RR Sabha Annual Music Festival (2009) in Kolkata
Sri. K. Sathyanarayana’s keyboard concert was a first of its kind in Kolkata. As I was entering Tyagaraja hall, my friend remarked “sound check er shomoy jaa nattai baajaalo, taa awshaadharon!” - tui kintu miss korlee… turns out that I had missed the varnam (sri raga) as well! Those who couldn’t make it early were left to rue as to what might have been. Regardless, yours truly was all eyes and ears from Gajavadana (sriranjani; S) onwards. The eighth grader from Padma Seshadri fulfilled audience expectations, acquitting himself very creditably in the company of Sri. S. Venkatakrishnan (violin), Sri. T.K. Karthik (mridangam), Sri. Hariharasubhramaniam (ghatam AND morsing) and his father and mentor Sri. T. Krishnababu who compered the proceedings. Sathya proceeded to play chandram bhaja (asaveri), tolijanma (bilahari; R,S), dudukugala (gowla) and visalakshi (kasi ramakriya; S) in succession, highlighting their musical richness. The tonal contrast between the keyboard and the violin was striking and bass effects were very enjoyable. Major effort went into the interpretation of dinamani vamsa (harikamboji; R,S,T) and it garnered the artistes a standing ovation after the tani avartana. Sabhapatikku (abhogi) preceded the RTP in shanmukhapriya (khanda triputa). A ragamalika (chinnanchirukiliye) and a ragatalamalika (excerpts from his album vatapi to vandemataram) were featured in the early and later segments, respectively. Sathya has said that he wants to be a “complete musician” – words that struck a chord in our hearts as he played the lines “suhaasini, su madhura bhaashini, sukhadaam varadaam maataram, vande maataram!”
