A review from a rasika of 26th Sep'07 concert

I am pleased to give below the review received froma rasika on the concert performance of Sathya on the 26th Sep'07. I sincerely thank her for the effort taken and the support extended inattending the concert.

Qte:
PROFESSIONAL TOUCH

Sathya went about his performance like clockwork and clearly exhibited true professionalism in Wednesday's concert(26.8.07) held at SGS sabha Kalyana Mandapam for 50-50 club. The crisp rendition of Varnam in Amrithavarshini provided a good start for the 2-hour long kutcheri. This was followed by the refreshing Guruleka Etuvanti a Thyagarajar krithi, the recital of which has become a rarity, these days. Sathya's interpretation of Ananda Bhairavi raga with an air of tranquility, was pleasing to the ears. Following the krithis in Darbar and Keeravani, Marukelara was played, on the lighter note. The fast paced swaras were handled with great dexterity and the pitch bend was aptly used in the right measure.

Siva Siva in Pantuvarali was embellished with skillfully woven swara patterns. These included more of sarvalaghu and less of kanakku swaras. The kuraipu swaram ushered in enthusiasm as the violinist's deft fingers equally matched it. The main raga for the day was Karaharapriya (Pakkani Nilabadi) which also featured the tani. The alapana was a flow of creativity. The korvai which sathya played with absolute ease revealed his laya control. The mrudangam , kanjira and ghatam artists presented the tani was a high level of experience. The concluding piece was a Madhyamavathi song.

Sathya's performance has indeed exposed the ingredients of classicism even in a digital instrument.

26th September,2007 concert for 50 - 50 club in Chennai

It was a good evening as he was performing once again in a public concert for 50-50 Club at the SGS Sabha Wedding Hall premises on the 26th Sep'07. Knowing the audience taste and expectations Sathya had prepared for a list that at the end of the day was very much liked by the entire audience who had turned out in good number. Sathya had the team of M Rajeev on Violin, Thillaistanam R Suriyanarayanan on Mrudhangam, J Sowrirajan on Kanjeera and Chandrasekara Sharma on the ghatmam.

Sathya started off the concert with a varnam composed by Sri S. V. Seshadri on Lord Vigneswara in the ragam Amrudhavarshini (may be the sudden rain in Chennai is due to this varnam only) set to Adi thalam and concluded with a mangalam on Lord Vigneswara with a Papanasam Sivan composition - Vignavinayaka Moorthikku Mangalam in Madhyamavathi. While he did a good raga lapana for three kritis he did open always with a outline of teh raga for every krithi. This as well as his singing the first line of each pallvi was in for great praise.

Both Sathya and Rajeev proved their talents in alapanas and kalpanaprayogams and the team was appreciated by one and all. While the concert was scheduled for 150 mts got reduced due to their meeting and for this one of the rasikas said that the shortened concert was indeed a great success as like the T20 worldcup.

The song selection was welcomed very much by the audience and the kalaparamanams of the krithis rendered were getting special applause. Due to time constraint the percussion team gave a sweet and short thani in Misrachaapu krithi - Pakalanilapadi on Karaharapriya. He performed the last two raagamalikas on the request by the audience. It was indeed a good exposure for Sathya and the instrument in particular, as there were almost only senior citizen who had attended the concert and almost every one personally appreciated Sathya's efforts in bring out the nuances of Carnatic on Keyboard.

Sep 19th, 2007 performance at Luz Vinayagar Temple

It was a nice concert presented by the team of Sathya - Keyboard, Sri Ananthapadmanabha – Violin, Sri Arjun Ganesh – Mrudhangam and Sri J Sowrirajan on Ghatam & Morsing at Arulmigu Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple, Luz, Mylapore on the 19th Sep’07. It was well attended and received by a good number of audience.

Sathya preferred to present this as a thematic concert i.e. krithis based on Lord Vinayaka and performed few krithis which he was attempting first time on stage. Starting with Sree Gana Pathimbaje on Sourastram the team performed 10 krithis in all concluding the concertt with a mangalam on ragam Madhyamavathi.

While it was supposed to have been 9 krithis, Sathya performed one more as the time was extended and performed a rasika's request of a krithi on lord Ganesa namely Mahaganapathim on Naatai.

All the krithis had at-least an outline of the raga and Sathya elaborated Gowla and Shanmugapriya which were taken as sub main and main for the day. He also performed kalpanaswarams for Vathapi with niraval in “Pranava Swarupa”, Gowla, Shanmugapriya and Thillang.

Ananthapdamanabha who was enhancing Sathya’s concert after a long gap was excellent through out the concert and excelled during his solo. He was found appreciating many phrases on alalapanas and swaras of Sathya – a good way of encouraging. Arjun Ganesh was at his best with superb presentation which paved way for the enhancements of the concert as a whole along with Sowrirajan who was handling Ghatam & Morsing appropriately. The crisp thani was an exhibition of both the artists high talents.

The list of krithis performed were:

01. SreeGanapathimBaje – Sowrashtram – Adi - Tyagaraja
02. Vathapi Ganapathim–Hamsadhwani– Adi–Dikshidhar(R –N –KS)

The voice recorder which we tried to record this concert with, did not not work due to power problem. Thanks to Muthu Audios and the temple authorities we could get the recording in a tape to convert to mp3 files. However the recording starts a little late in the first krithi and also the tape ran out of time because of which the last two krithis were not recorded.
