A great recognition for Sathya at "The Music Academy"

I had been to MFAC today 12th Nov'06 to attend the "Mudra" music directory 2007 release function and got a news that Sathya's photograph of an article is placed in The Music Academy. I was wondering and was enthralled with the huge article page made into a hoardring and kept just at the main entrance of "The Music Academy". God has been very kind and we thank "The Hindu" for having Sathya's article in the midst of great reviews. Our thanks to Sri Gopi mama of Coimbatore who was the main cause for Sathya to perform in Coimbatore without which this could not have happened.

My sincere thanks to Mr Pyarilal, www.carnaticsangeetham.com who was kind enough to come and take all the photos displayed above and send it to me instantly.

Thanks to Mr Thomas for a great oppurtunity at ECA, Bangalore

Sathya enjoyed the concert tour to Bangalore for East Cultural Association who had arranged a solo concert of Sathya handling two keyboards on the 11th Nov'06. Sathya used his Yamaha PSR 640 for Rhythma nd Korg TR for melody and performed numbers from Carnatic, Western and Film numbers.

Mr Thomas, Cultural wing incharge said that the concert was far beyond the imagination of himself with Sathya excelling in all varieties of music and gave great presentation on each form.

Sathya performed Vathapi Ganapathim & Chinnanchirukiliye in carnatic side with one of his own composition based on ragam Kaapi, Keeravani and Gowri Manohari which made got specail appreciation from the audience present.

He performed Theme from Fox and his8th grade western lession named Mad Max under the western form. He played the ever green number of Churaliya & and few hindi numbers like Kajurare, Thuje Deku deku Sona, Humma Humma. He also sang the pallavi for the song Illamaiyenum Poongatru - one of the all time great compositions of Maestro Illayaraja.

It was indeed a great auditorium with excellent PA system of international standard and the team including the sound engineer of East Cultural assoicaition were very co-opertive and made the visit very memorable.

Here is the msg received from Mr Thomas Kunnath, Cultural incharge ECA and we thank him for wonderful report.

Report from Mr Thomas Kunnath

I really from my heart, tell you that Sathya's abilities are more than I or infact members of our club expected. He has a very bright future.

I'm attaching few comments from our members

1. Sreedevi Unni(Well known Mohiniattam dancer, She has a dance troupe which performs all over the world. She is the mother of National award actress Monisha Unni who passed away few years back) while introducing Sathya she said, Sathya at a young age of 11 is able to recite kirthana's & raga's which usually is achieved by professional singer's/musicians with decades of practice.

2. Shaji Pillai(A top executive of IBM. He is also a singer) : Shaji Pillai said,Its amazing to see that a boy at the age of 11 can handle all Ragam, thallam & pallavi. The way Sathya moving over from Carnatic to Semi-classical to western to filmy numbers was extra-ordinary. He also remarked Sathya has opened his eyes on how much a child can do. He said he will surely take the advice of TKB and will try to find out the talents in his children.

3. A very senior member of around 75 plus years came all the way up the stage and gave flowers to Sathya and wished him to be a great musician.

There are many more. It was unfortunate that our circular did not reach our members. We had posted it on Tuesday.

It was a small crowd of only around 100 members. The best part was that no one got up from their seats till Sathya program was over.

A big auditorium of 1000 member capacity, with good music system & aquatics and with only Sathya & around 100 music lovers and pin drop silence - It was amazing.

Sathya in POGO hoarding all round Chennai City

It was indeed a great day for our family as we got the information from Pranav, Sathya's friend that he saw a huge hoarding of POGO awards pre-event campaign with Sathya figuring in almost a life siize image. After finishing the concert at Narada Gana Sabha we stayed back to hear Sri Vijay Sivas's concert after which we went to see the hoardings at Adyar and Besant Nagar.

However by the time we reached Adyar it became dark and unfortunately the lights provided for the hoarding was not lite. But we were thrilled to see a huge hoarding there with the caption " Chennai's World Famous Musician - K Sathyanarayanan - Nomiee - Musician".
As we were looking at the hoarding, fruit and garland vendors noticed Sathya and were happy to see the child in a hoarding opposite to their location. They conveyed their wishes and few also took autograph from him.

Then we went to Besant Nagar and were moved to see a well lite hoarding right at the beach and spent almost 2 hours there. Our friend well wisher Mr Rajasekar came down and took photos there. The local residents and children crowded Sathya and started interacting. All of them wished him and a group of local residents wanted to take a photograph with him. Understand there are around 8 locations where the hoardings are kept. We hope with the blessings of the almighty and the wishes of all his well wishers he moves to the next round of 3. We sincerly thank god for this great gift.
The photos above are:

It was also one of the best performance of Sathya and got appreciation from Sri Vijay Siva, Smt Vijayalakshmi and Neyveli Narayanan - the team which performed the next concert. Sri Sashikiran also praised Sathya for performing Marivere - Anandha Bhairavi to its true carnatic value on the keyboard which he said is very very difficult to present.
The team of B Anathakrishnan - violin, Thillaisthanam Suriyanarayanan - mrudhangam and Sowrirajan - Kanjeera & morsing was brilliant in their share of performance and enchansed the concert in all means. The list of songs presented is as follows:

Sathya was happy to perform his second concert at vellore on the 5th Nov'06, this time for "Saraswathi Isai Arangam" an institution run by Mr & Mrs Surendran. It was indeed a memorable concert & rates this as one his best concerts with a great ambience. He had L Ramakrishnan on violin, Thillaisthanam Suriyanarayanan on the mrudhangam and Prof Dr vellore A. R. Srinivasa on Morsing.

Here is the review of this concert from Dr Prof Srinivasan (also the morsing artist for the day) which had come to our email id:

Young Sathya is really a maestro to the core. The gay abandon with which he played was simply superb. With his dignified keyboard playing and maturity beyond age, he mesmerized the rasikas of Saraswati Isai Arangam , Vellore. The concert was held on Nov . 5th .

The brilliant violin support provided by young Sr i Ramakrishnan - a disciple of Vidushi Kanyakumari and the vibrant percussive support on the Mridangam by Thillaisthanam Sri Suryanarayanan , a worthy disciple of Guru Kumbakonam Sri Rajappaiyer added glory to the concert. I was very fortunate to have shared the concert platform by providing Morsing support. It is a matter of great pride for me to be addressed as the first Morsing artiste to have accompanied the young genius.

Sathya's father Sri Krishna Babu interspersed the concert with lucid and thought provoking comments. Sri Krishnababu kindled the interest and musical instinct of many a student of carnatic music who had gathered in large numbers for Sathya's concert. Starting off on a delectable note with the evergreen Sami ninne varnam in Sri , Master... no , no... maestro Sathya proceeded to serve a wholesome ,intellectually appealing Hamsadhwani ;Gam ganapathe . His grip over the Adi talam tisra nadai won accolades . A rich Mayamalavagaula portraying Sri Swati Tirunal's Devadevakalaya brought many a glimpse of Sri Semmangudi mama. Everybody listening to Sathya wondered how he could so vividly perform niraval & swaraprastharas on an alien instrument viz. Keyboard . Amazing karvais emanated from the masterly use of the 'sustain knob '.

The piece de resistance was however the brilliant alapana in Kalyani for Vasudevayani . Swaraprastharas in Kalyani ,Kambhoji and Ratipatipriya in the forward and reverse directions baffled the discerning audience . Not to deprive the rasikas of tani avartanam and also keeping in view the audience interest ( to listen maximally to Sathya ), Sri Surya & I rounded off with a brief spell. Arabimanam ( ragamalika ) as well as the surprise inclusion of a Hungarian dance no. based on Natabhairavi surprised the audience . Padmasri Lalgudi's tillana in Jonpuri was recieved well . A memorable concert at my hometown ...after a long ,long time …………………

Special mention has to be made of the Surendrans ( organisers )who provided wonderful hospitality to the artistes and a marvelous ambience for the rasikas.

Hats off to Sathya!! May God Bless him .

Sathya performed for Kartik Fine Arts today 27th Oct'06 with Parur Ananthakrishnan on violin and Srivanchiam Sriram on Mrudhangam. Sathya started the concert with Viruboni - Bhairavi atathala varnam followed by Vallaba on Begada which was a first attempt. A short ragaalapana was followed by the krithi and the kalpana swaras were on perfect placement. Being a maiden attempt it was indeed good presentation.

The raga alapana of Mohanam was a neatly presented by both Sathya and Ananthakrishnan and Sriram gave a good percusion support for the song Pahimam Parvathi set to Rupaka Thalam. The team had a good number of audience inspite of heavy rain and were blessed with the presence of two of the cheif guests of Carnataka Sangeetha Sabha inaguaration namely Sri Subramaniam a ordent carnatic music rasika and Sri T R Balakrishnan - Inventor Balaveenai. When Sathya announce dthe composer of Mamavasadha on Nattakurinji as Sama Sri Balakrishnan corrected him and infmd that it was a Swathi Thirunal Krithi which was very pleasing to the ears.

The main ragam for the day was Shanmugapriya with Saravanabhava ennum Thirumanthiram being Sashti day and Sathya gave an elaborate alapana. Ananthakrishnan coming from the traditional Parur family of vidwans gave an equally emphatic alapana. Sathya presented ragamalika in kalapanaswara with valaji, kalyani and bandhuvarali and each one was a jem flowing from the fingers of the artists. Sriram gave a commandable support through out and won appreciation for his crisp and effective thani.

Gamakas on the keyboard

K. Satyanarayanan's lively raga delineations proved his proficiency in the department of laya.

article courtesty: TheHindu - B. RAMADEVI Coimbatore edition

DEDICATED: Master K. Satyanarayanan. Photo: S. Siva Saravanan.

While parents of 11-year-olds are struggling with their wards to get their homework done, the proud father of K. Satyanarayanan was sitting behind his talented son and guiding him during the 30th Navaratri celebrations at Sri Kamakshi Amman Temple, Coimbatore. The child prodigy was performing on the keyboard like an experienced musician with his innocent young face belying his skill. Trained by A. Kanyakumari and U. Srinivas, Satyanarayanan was able to bring forth gamakas happily in an instrument known to be purely western and incapable of producing one of the most important aspects of Carnatic music.

Sincere practice
With a little bit of carelessness, the music could have gone awry, as there was no provision for measurement in the instrument that he used for gamakas; but with his dedication and sincere practice the youngster only claimed admiration. The concert began with the majestic Mallari in Gambhira Nattai followed by the varnam in Sahana, `Karunimpa' and `Sri Gananatham' in Kanakangi. His raga delineations were lively and different and he has gained good mastery over the laya.

`Thaye Tripura Sundari' (Sudha Saveri), `Meenakshi Me Mudham Dehi' (Purvikalyani), `Krishna Nee Begane Baro' (Yamunakalyani), `Devi Neeye Thunai' (Keeravani), `Marukelara' (Jayanthasri) and `Tahamburi Meetidhava' (Sindhu bhairavi) and `Kamakshi, Amba' in Bhairavi, were some of the lively songs that he presented. He rendered `Palinchu Kamakshi' in Madhyamavati by Syama Sastri, beautifying it with a lively alapana and engaging swaraprastharas.

He concluded his concert with `Maithreem Bhajatha,' the song composed by Kanchi Paramacharya appealing to people to cultivate friendship and a tillana in Jonpuri by Lalgudi G. Jayaraman. Satyanarayanan has acquired all the skills that can be attained with involvement and practice, but will be at ease with the `sowkya bhava' as he grows older. B. Anantha Krishnan's imaginative and crisp alpanas and swaraprastaras were enjoyable.

Thillaisthanam R. Suryanarayanan on the mridangam and Harihara Subramanian on the ghatam were supportive.

At the Launch of Hello FM 106.4 - 24th Sep'06

Sathya performed at the launch function of Hello FM 106.4 held at The Park Sheraton, Chennai on the 24th Sep’06. It was indeed remarkable of Sathya in handling two different kinds of presentation within a gap of an hour or two. He was also successful in getting appreciation from two different sets of audience not just because of his age but for his great ability of proper presentation.

Yes after playing at the temple forum of Sri Sai Baba’s Sundaram, Sathya performed with the team of Paul Jacob on Bass guitar, Donnan Murray on Lead Guitar and Balu on the Mrudhangam at the Park Sheraton for the launch function. The team gave a presentation of Carnatic songs without crossing the so called rules and regulation or the nuances of Carnatic but mixing the tones of the guitar to that of the Carnatic classical numbers of Raja Raja in Nirosta, Niravathisukatha in Ravichandrika and a Kavadi Sindhu. Every one who was there for the function appreciated the team efforts and in particular Sathya for his great adaptability to perform in different conditions

Sathya at Sundaram, Sri Saibaba's Temple, Chennai - 24th Sep'06

Sathya was blessed with an opportunity to perform at Sundaram, Sai Temple in R A Puram, Chennai on the 24th Sep’06 with Sri Villiwakkam Raghuraman on violin and Sri Nanganallur Ravishankar on the Mrudhangam. It was indeed a great experience and blessing for Sathya who performed a good 1 hour concert with his team & the same was well appreciated by a full house audience.

Sri Raghuraman and Ravishankar excelled in their part and the trio’s presentation was very good and looked as if they had played together as team for many concerts. However it was for the first time they teamed up and with the grace of Sathya Sai the presentation came very good.
